My story…
I was born and raised in Yorkshire, England and completed a degree in geology at Dundee University, Scotland. After a few years in the offshore oil and gas industry in the UK North Sea I came to BC on a whitewater kayaking trip in 1990 – after which I decided Western Canada had a lot more to offer than the small, overcrowded UK. After several years working in Cape Town, South Africa, I met my future wife Charmain, also a Geologist and we returned to Canada as residents, and both worked in the oil and gas industry in Alberta and Nova Scotia. In Nova Scotia we bought a small boat and set sail on a world circumnavigation in 2001. After 5 years of sailing, a few years in Australia, and then back to Africa we decided we had had enough of working in remote places, away from home for long periods. In 2019 we made the move back to BC, after quitting work and I did the Fine Furniture course at Selkirk College in Nelson. Our plan now is to enjoy the relaxed Kootenay life, bring up our kids in a beautiful place, and embark on a more creative, satisfying second career.
The Bee
Being born and raised in England, I was inspired and influenced by some of the finest furniture makers in the world. I grew up a just a few miles from the famous Robert Thompson (The “Mouseman”) master furniture maker. The tradition of adorning furniture with a carved logo which is so popular in Yorkshire, is also seen in Mike’s work. The carved bee logo is very subtly incorporated in each furniture piece, always perfectly placed and distinctive.

Because we care about the earth..
At Bibby Fine Furniture we care about the earth and the future of our planet. We love spending time outdoors with our family and feel that we can make a small difference to our planet in the time we spend here. We are proud to say that all our furniture is made from wood sourced from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified forests - this certification is the gold standard for responsibly managed forests.
We are also proud to announce that with every completed project we will make a donation to The Bee Conservancy. This non-profit organization is dedicated to protecting bees, their environment, habitat and food sources. With our donations we are making a contribution towards setting up beehives in Canada and the US.
We are also committed to integrating Circular design into our business - not only does circular design look at the product itself, but also it’s entire life-cycle. Wood is a great natural, renewable product which can be re-used, re-finished and re-cycled with minimal waste.
We are also proud to be part of the Artisans listed on Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism
